Audacity

Audacity is the sound-editing program that will help you organize your podcast and export it as an MP3 file that can be played on any computer. Audacity will be available on the computers in the World Language Lab, but if you wish to work on your project at home, you will need to download Audacity to your home computer (1A) or have it available on a USB drive (1B). Follow the instructions below for step 1A or 1B below, depending on how and where you would like to use Audacity.

Regardless of whether you download Audacity to a home computer or Audacity Portable to a USB drive, you must also download the Lame_Enc.dll file, which enables Audacity to export its native file format (.aup) to an MP3 or .wav file. Follow the instructions in step 2 below.

1A. Downloading Audacity to your home computer:

  1. Click the link for Audacity and choose "Save" to download the .exe file

  2. Save the .exe somewhere that is easily accessible, such as your Desktop

  3. Once downloaded, doubl-click the .exe file to install Audacity

  4. Follow all instructions in the install process (use the default options when prompted)

  5. When the installation completes, Audacity will open automatically and will be ready to use

  6. Continue to step 2, below, to download the Lame_Enc.dll file

1B. Downloading Audacity Portable to a USB drive:

  1. Click the link for Audacity Portable and choose Download Now

  2. On the resulting pop-up, click Save (Note: You may need to give your browser permission to download the pop-up; check the top of your browser screen for messages)

  3. Navigate to your removable disk (USB drive), and click Save

  4. From the USB drive, double-click the Audacity icon

  5. On the Audacity Portable pop-up, click Next

  6. Click Browse, and navigate to the USB drive

  7. Click Install; when the installation completes, click Finish

  8. Double-click the AudacityPortable folder

  9. Double-click AudacityPortable.exe

  10. To use Audacity after you have downloaded it, navigate to your USB drive and repeat steps 8 and 9 above

  11. Continue to step 2, below, to download the Lame_Enc.dll file

2. Downloading the Lame_Enc.dll file:

  1. Click the link for Lame_Enc.dll and choose "Save" to download the .dll file

  2. Save it to the same USB drive where you have Audacity; be sure to remember the directory and folder you stored it in

  3. The first time you export a podcast as an MP3, Audacity will prompt you to find the .dll file.

For more help using Audacity, use the Help file within the software, or visit the Audacity Wiki.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you are transporting Audacity work between a home computer and a school computer, you must save both the .aup file and its associated _data folder to your portable drive. For example, if your Audacity file is called commercial.aup, copy that and the commercial_data folder to your portable drive. Consider those two items to be "Siamese twins;" they must go everywhere together, and one will not work without the other.
