The Assignment

In this project you will research a Spanish-speaking city/country and give a presentation in class about a natural disaster that had struck that region at some point in the past. The United States is not allowed to be used. The in-class presentation will be done in Spanish by all members of the group.

You may work alone or with as many as four people per group. Under no circumstances may more than four people work together.

Your in-class presentation has no time limit. The group may take as long as necessary, but please let your teacher know if the whole class period will be needed. When speaking, note cards are permissible; however, you may not write “word for word” what is being said. There is a reason that they are called NOTE cards. Practice your spoken part so that you have a superior understanding of the information you are explaining. Also, the group must have visuals prepared to demonstrate to the class.

No group is completely finished with their project until they have successfully answered as many questions as there are group members from the audience. These questions may be prearranged, but the same person in the group may not answer all three. Everyone must answer at least one.

And with any group project, all members must submit a paragraph written in Spanish that explains what each person contributed to the project. And since this is a research project, it is necessary that each member of the group submit his/her own source list following the MLA format. Use the Modern Language Association’s Web site www.mla.org for more help in this area.

The Breakdown

Speaking (50 pts): All members must speak in Spanish. This includes the question/answer portion. Individual grade.

Visuals (20 pts): All groups must have visuals for the class to see and for the group to refer to in the presentation. Group grade.

Sources (20 pts): All members must submit their own list of sources used in their own particular areas of research. Individual grade.

Note cards (10 pts): Must be handed in for verification. Remember not to write your entire presentation on the card, only notes.
