Qualifications
Applicants must be in their junior year of high
school with a B average and have standardized test (PSAT) scores in the 90th
percentile or better. Exception:
School of the Arts where talent is the main criteria.
Cost
The Governor's School is free of cost to participants! It is directly supported through partnerships with business and industry.
Application Process
High schools are permitted to nominate one (1) student per school for up to 325 students in the current junior class. If the number exceeds 325, two (2) nominations may be made.
Applications are available through the Gateway office. The requirements for each school vary, but generally students must supply the following: two letters of recommendation from faculty, a resume of activities, an essay stating why they wish to attend the school, an essay about a school-related topic, a autobiography, and a signed transcript-release form. Approximately 70-100 students are selected per academic school
Timeline - For Governor's School 2009
Applications are due to Gateway on or before Thursday, November 13, 2008,
unless permission has been granted for an extension. If more than one qualified student applies for a School, a
committee will meet to select the high school nominee(s) for that particular
school.
On
November 21, 2008, the applications of the nominated students will be
hand delivered to the Hunterdon County office for screening.
In
early January, the County will forward up to 4 applications to each of the
colleges for consideration. The
individual colleges select the finalists. February/March:
School of the arts preliminary auditions - will resume in 2010.
In April application status letters sent to all finalists by each
Governor’s School.
