Freshmen and Parents Night by the Guidance Department

Questions and Answers

Based upon a history of working with new students at North Hunterdon High School, the Peer Leaders compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions for the Freshmen & Parents Night Presentation. Peer Leaders shared the questions and their answers with the new ninth graders and their parents & guardians on Wednesday evening, August 20, 2008. The FAQ and their answers are provided here:

1)      How can I find my way around such a big school?

The Freshmen Discovery Program is designed to help students become more aware of their surroundings. All freshmen start school a day before the other classes, so they will have an additional day to navigate their way from class to class without several people milling around! If you get lost, don’t be afraid to ask a teacher or upperclassman for help.

2)     Why do I need an I.D. card?

Student identification is important for safety reasons. I.D. cards ensure that all students are who they say they are, and are where they are supposed to be. Make sure you carry your I.D. with you at all times. If you lose your I.D. in the middle of the year, you can pay $5 to get a replacement. You will get a new I.D. card every year.

3)     What if I need extra help in one of my classes?

Talk to your teacher! Almost all teachers offer extra help sessions before or after school. In addition, there are resource rooms for Math, Science, English, World Languages and History. Peer tutoring is also available.

4)     What should I do if I miss the morning announcements?

Visit the school website, www.nhvweb.net/nhhs. They are posted in written form the night before they are announced in the homeroom period.

5)     How do the “late buses” work?

The “late buses”, also known as “the 3:10 buses”, are provided for students who remain at school for clubs and/or extra help during the Curriculum and Instruction Period. The buses are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. However, because there are fewer buses covering a larger area, a first-time rider should walk down the row and ask the bus drivers if they will be traveling to a stop near the student’s home. It may not be the same stop where the student gets off the regular bus on other days.

6)     How can I get involved in extra-curricular activities?

Listen for announcements and check the school website for information. Communicate with the advisor or coach. There are so many activities that North has to offer- don’t miss out!

Thank you to the Peer Leaders for their excellent presentation and helpful participation in the Freshmen and Parents Night, 2008!
