The one hundred
and thirty-second Word of the Day is ostracize [os-truh-sahyz],
which is derived from an Athenian practice of yearly voting to decide who, if
anyone, should be banished temporarily for the good of the city. Today it means
to banish or to shut out from society, from favors or privileges. It is spelled
O-S-T-R-A-C-I-Z-E. To use it in a
sentence, you could say, “Occasionally, an individual may be ostracized from
a particular social group.”
